What is FUE hair transplant surgery?

FUE, which is an abbreviation for follicular unit extraction, hair transplant surgery is the most modern and popular method of hair restoration, beating the strip harvesting or FUT methods of hair transplantation.

Utilising a specially calibrated extraction tool with a diameter of less than 1mm, individual hair follicles are extracted from a donor area on your scalp which is usually found on the rear of the head. These individual follicles are then transplanted into the recipient area on the scalp in groups ranging in size of up to four hairs to mimic the natural pattern of your hair growth using a powerful stereo microscope.

The procedure itself is considered minimally invasive and only requires the use of a local anaesthetic on the scalp rather than a general anaesthetic, reducing your recovery time post-operation and lowering any risk of complication.

The results associated with the FUE method of hair transplant surgery are of the highest quality and provide the most natural looking appearance of all the hair transplantation methods. Because this method often gives results that are undetectable from your natural hair, this method is generally preferred by the majority of our clients.

What should you expect with an FUE hair transplant surgery?

Hair transplant surgery is something that is becoming more and more popular in modern society, with huge celebrities like Wayne Rooney and Robbie Williams famously taking steps to restore their locks. It isn’t a miracle cure that instantly stops the baldness though and doing your research is vital before booking yourself in for a surgery. You need to make sure that all your questions and queries are answered, so take a look at some of the more commonly asked ones below.

For the majority of patients, the recovery time is around 6-8 days and some swelling on the scalp is normal during this period, though this is temporary and will resolve itself over this period, with a full recovery happening in just a couple of days/weeks.

Once the procedure is complete, you will be able to see your new hairs and the new shape of your hairline, however these will all fall out around 2 to 3 weeks after your surgery. This is completely normal and is part of the natural growth cycle, within 6 months the new hairs will start to grow through permanently and your full results will be visible between 9 to 12 months after your procedure.

As with any form of transplant surgery, there is some form of scarring associated with an FUE transplant but because of the way it’s performed, the scarring is practically invisible most of the time. The good news is, the scars associated with FUE are minute and resemble dots on the scalp where each follicle was removed, unless the patient completely shaves their head then no marks will be visible.

You may feel some irritation on the scalp following your surgery, but it’s performed under a local anaesthetic and is generally considered to be a painless process. We understand that every patient is different and some may be more sensitive than others.

FUE is one of the most popular hair restoration techniques worldwide thanks to the huge advantage it has on other techniques. This advantage is that the hair will grow back in to donor area where the follicles were extracted. Although the time this takes will vary from person to person, it is still a huge advantage over any other methods of hair restoration.

Although your surgeon may recommend that you take Finasteride following your surgery, it isn’t a mandatory requirement. It can be recommended as it can slow the effects of hair loss and give you a better base point to work from when the new hair is beginning to grow back through.

After your surgery, it’s advised that you simply rest and recover at home whilst doing minimal activities that could cause any stress. We advise that for the first three nights after the surgery, you should sleep with your head elevated at a 45 degree angle to avoid swelling, for three to five days you should stay away from alcoholic beverages and also avoid aspirin as these thin the blood and can cause issues.
