Breast reduction surgery

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery, otherwise known as a mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that is performed to reshape the breast and nipple to remove excess tissue and skin, providing you with life-changing results. Although it isn’t as commonly spoken about as a breast enlargement surgery, it’s probably more important for women around the world as it can help on a physical level as well as an emotional and psychological level.

We often hear of ladies who have just coped with having larger breasts and not only can this affect self-esteem, but it can also cause a great amount of pain and discomfort to the bearer. Ideally, the size of a woman’s breasts should be proportionate to the frame of their body and should make them feel comfortable in themselves, however with larger breasts that can outgrow the natural frame can cause back and neck pains and contribute to bad posture.

This type of surgery often goes hand in hand with liposuction surgery to ensure that the surrounding area is still naturally sculpted and your chest will continue to have a natural appearance. Our surgeons work in unison with every patient to create an individual design to give you the results that you’ve desired and finally alleviate the pain and tension that has built up over the years.

What should you expect with breast reduction surgery?

Although breast reduction surgery is not as common as a breast enlargement surgery, the results and the need for the surgery to occur are just as important. Coming to the decision that you wish to reduce the size of your breasts can be a lot easier than deciding you wish to enlarge them, however it’s just as vital to do your research before booking your procedure and even after this you can still be sat with a number of questions on what to expect about the surgery, the recovery period and aftercare procedures. Some of the more commonly asked queries are answered below, but if you’re still stuck then we are happy to answer any questions that you have!

No two women’s breasts are the same, and using that logic no two breast surgeries are the same. When it comes to breast reductions, it’s tricky to give a definitive price but our surgeries start at £6450.

Because of their weight, large breasts often sag and as a result of this, it can cause the nipples to point downwards. A breast reduction surgery is performed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts, resulting in smaller, firmer and more lifted breasts that appear more proportional to the rest of your body.

It’s incredibly common for women to have one breast larger than the other, however in extreme cases this can be a noticeable difference. In these cases, it’s possible to create a more even appearance with a breast reduction surgery being used to reduce the size of the larger breast.

Following your reduction surgery, the size and shape of your breasts shouldn’t change in future. However, if you lose or gain a significant amount of weight in the future this can result in a fluctuation to the size and shape. If you have any weight goals in mind or are planning on becoming pregnant, this should be discussed with your surgeon prior to the procedure.

Not necessarily, this is dependent entirely on the individual surgery that is being performed and how much tissue is being removed. If a large amount of tissue is to be removed and the nipple would appear to be out of place following the surgery, the nipple can then be repositioned into the optimum location on the breast to maintain a natural appearance.

The procedure itself is often a slightly longer one than any other breast surgeries as it contains a bit more to it. There are a number of steps including tissue removal, re-shaping of the breast and repositioning of the nipple and because of this, the surgery usually takes around two to four hours to be carried out.

Generally we find that following a breast reduction surgery, women are usually much happier with their breasts and find that having smaller breasts leads to a much higher level of comfort and general happiness. Unlike a breast enlargement where the implants will need to be replaced after a certain amount of time, a breast reduction surgery doesn’t require any follow-up procedures to keep their appearance up.
