What is labiaplasty surgery?

Labiaplasty is a form of surgical procedure that is carried out to alter the size of the labia, either by reducing or increasing their size. Generally, the procedure itself is performed to improve the appearance of the labia, as a part of gender-affirming surgery or to reduce some form of physical discomfort.

“Labia” is the terminology for the folds of skin around the opening of the vagina, of which there are two different parts. The outer folds are known as the labia majora (which translates to large lips) and are the part which protect the external genitalia, whereas the inner folds are known as the labia minora (which translates to small lips) and is the part that protects the openings of the urethra and vagina.

The two major forms of labiaplasty that are performed are known as the trim procedure and the wedge procedure, each with their own benefits and downsides. The trim procedure was the first procedure that was used within labiaplasty and is the most widely performed by surgeons, removing excess tissue from the labia minora before it is sutured to become symmetrical with the labia majora. With the wedge procedure, a partial thickness is removed from the thickest areas of the labia minora (leaving the submucosa layer intact). This results in a natural appearance to the vagina post-surgery, preserving the existing edges of the labia. There are also a number of other techniques that can be performed with their own pros and cons, which will all be discussed with the surgeon prior to surgery to find the perfect procedure to achieve your results.

What should you expect with a labiaplasty surgery?

Labiaplasty is purposely designed to alter the appearance of the labia to improve confidence and reduce pain. Whilst every woman has different labia, it’s been noted than pornography has caused an increase in the number of women who are opting for labiaplasty surgery so that their labia can appear like those that they see online. Like with all surgical procedures, it’s highly important to carry out the right research and ask the right questions before booking your consultation, we’ve answered some of the more common ones below;

The labia can be enlarged for a number of reasons, most notably it can be due to aging, childbirth, amount of sexual activity or even just down to genetics.

The good news with labiaplasty surgery is that there will be no visible scarring after the surgery is complete, any scars from the incisions will be hidden and concealed with the natural creases and folds of the skin.

After undergoing a labiaplasty, it’s normal to experience tenderness, bruising and swelling in the area for around two weeks. For the first 3 or 4 days, it’s advised to wear pads as there will be some form of spotting. After a week, you should be able to return to work (depending on your job) but you will not be able to exercise or have intercourse for 6 weeks after surgery.

Labiaplasty surgery is an outpatient procedure and takes around an hour or so to complete, meaning that you’ll be able to go back home again on the same day.

The labia should not have any effect on the ability to bear children, so as long as you have completely healed and recovered from your labiaplasty surgery then you should be absolutely fine to have more children. If you have any concerns, these can always be discussed with your GP or a pregnancy specialist.

All surgical procedures come with at least some degree of risk and labiaplasty is no different. The possible risks include;

  • Bleeding
  • Chronic dryness
  • Decreased sensitivity
  • Infection
  • Numbness
  • Pain during intercourse

These will all be discussed during a consultation and while they are considered a risk, they don’t affect every patient.

With Better Body Surgery, our prices for labiaplasty surgery start at just £2495. To find out more or to book a consultation, speak to our team today.
