What is buccal fat removal surgery?
Buccal fat removal is a minimally invasive form of cosmetic procedure that is used to target the buccal fat pad within the cheeks. The buccal fat pads are a rounded mass of fat that is found deep within the centre of the cheeks in the area beneath the cheekbone. The buccal fat pads are responsible for making the cheeks look puffy and they are directly responsible for the shape of the face. Once these have been surgically removed, the face will look leaner and have a more contoured shape, giving you a more defined jawline and cheekbones.
Everyone has these buccal fat pads present within their cheeks, but the size of them varies on a person to person basis. If you have larger amounts of buccal fat, then your face may appear to be too round or full whereas if you have lesser amounts of buccal fat, your face will appear to be slimmer and more defined.
The procedure is carried out under either local or general anaesthetic to help to minimise any pain and discomfort for the patient. A small incision will be made inside the interior of the cheek (which means that there will be no visible scarring) and the buccal fat pads are gently cut and removed through the incision. Once complete, the incision is sewn up and the recovery period can begin.
The recovery period associated with this form of surgery is incredibly short, with a number of patients needing only a day or two before they feel comfortable going back to work. It’s possible that the cheek area may be bruised and swollen for a short period after surgery but this is normal and will fade by itself over time. Once the swelling has subsided you will be able to see your final results, although it can take a few weeks for these to show completely.
You’re likely to be considered a good candidate to undergo surgery if you;
- Are generally good physical health
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Have rounder or fuller facial features
- Dislike the shape and size of your cheeks
- Don’t smoke regularly
- Are seeking to undergo facial feminization surgery
- Have problems such as pseudoherniation
The surgery isn’t for everyone though and is recommended to be avoided for the following reasons;
- Having a narrow face – If your face is naturally quite narrow, undergoing buccal fat removal surgery can cause the appearance of sunken cheeks later in life.
- Suffering from progressive hemifacial-atrophy – Although this disorder is rare, it causes the skin on one side of the face to shrink and is known to have an effect on the buccal fat pad.
- Generally being older – As you age, you will naturally lose the fat that is in your face and the procedure could put emphasis on jowls or other signs of ageing on the face.
