What is chin liposuction surgery?

Chin liposuction surgery is the surgical procedure associated with removing the fat that causes the appearance of a double chin. By using targeted suction, it’s possible to surgically remove the excess fat from the chin, neck and jowls to sculpt a more contoured and defined jawline, eradicating the appearance of a double chin.

Generally, chin liposuction is performed under local anaesthesia to numb the area to be operated on. During surgery, a number of small incisions underneath the chin and in some cases behind the ears are made before a cannula is used to remove the fat from beneath the skin. The cannula is a slim tube which is attached to a small vacuum which sucks out the fat and allows for the neck and chin to be reshaped. Each incision is closed with one or two stitches and then covered with a supportive wrap to keep the skin taut whilst it heals.

Chin liposuction surgery is a good choice for many patients who are looking to actively remove areas of stubborn fat from beneath the neck and chin. If you’re unable to fight away this stubborn fat through both diet and exercise alone, chin liposuction could be very beneficial for you. Even the smallest reduction of fat from beneath the skin and contouring the area can make a dramatic difference to the appearance of a patient.

What should you expect with chin liposuction surgery?

Whilst chin liposuction surgery isn’t talked about or performed as commonly as standard liposuction surgery, it’s still an incredibly effective way to deal with stubborn areas of fat that cause issues with confidence in your own body. As with any surgical procedure, performing your research before opting for surgery is vital and especially when it’s being performed on somewhere as visible as the face, so we’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions about chin liposuction below;

As with standard liposuction surgery, that fat cells are completely removed from the body so the results that you receive from chin liposuction should last for a lifetime, providing that you continue to actively work towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you don’t, then the fat cells cannot grow back but the surrounding cells will be able to enlarge and move into the now vacant space.

While the surgery itself is specifically designed to remove that fat cells from the skin, it’s quite common within patients that the recovery period is where you are likely to notice a small degree of skin tightening occurring as the skin molds to its new shape.

Undergoing a repeat surgery is not something that is unheard of and if you’re not happy with your results, provided you have recovered well from the first surgery you will be able to undergo a second chin liposuction surgery. It’s worth noting that the first procedure generally provides the most noticeable results.
The surgery itself is peformed under some level of anaesthesia (generally a local anasethetic on the chin/neck areas) and as such, the pain level associated with the surgery are considered to be minimal. Any post surgery pain can be managed with over the counter pain medication like paracetamol.
After any surgical procedure, scarring is an inevitability, but thanks to the latest surgical techniques and the way that any incisions are performed, any scarring is kept as minimal as possible and often will only be able to be noticed by yourself.
In short, no. Once the fat cells have been removed, they are incapable of growing back as they are something that is present in your body from birth, they normally grow or shrink based on your diet and level of activity/exercise. If they have been removed from the body then there is no way for them to grow back, however if no effort is made to maintain the results then surrounding fat cells can expand into the space that has been left.
Someone with bulky fat on their neck or jawline but otherwise is considered to be in good health and in their ideal weigh range would be someone who is considered as a good candidate. Chin liposuction surgery is to be performed for individuals who are struggling to fight away stubborn fat deposits through diet and exercise and isn’t to be considered as a method of weight loss.
