What is liposuction?

Sometimes, dieting and exercise is enough to maintain a healthy weight but it won’t always give you the results that you want from your body, and for others it simply doesn’t work, no matter how hard they try. This can come down to age, genetics and the type of lifestyle that is led, but there is a solution to finally fighting away the stubborn areas of fat that refuse to budge.

Liposuction is an incredible treatment that can be used to combat and remove stubborn deposits of fat on many areas of the body, including the stomach, hips, bum and chest, providing many of our patients with visible and lifechanging results!

Although a liposuction treatment will be the ideal standout solution for many people, it’s vital to know that it is not considered an alternative to dieting and exercising and should only be considered as the main option when all other routes have failed. You may also need to combine a liposuction treatment with a tummy tuck surgery as in some extreme cases, the skin doesn’t hold the elasticity required to tighten around the new body shape.

What should you expect with liposuction?

Liposuction is something that is quite commonly talked about and has been used or mentioned in many popular TV shows as a miracle way to get rid of excess fat and weight, but when it comes to the real procedure it’s no miracle and has a number of factors that can affect your suitability. Research is vital before any surgical procedure, especially those that can be as lifechanging as a huge amount of weight loss, but if you have any questions that you still need to ask then some of the more common ones are answered below!

The majority of our patients see their final results within three months of having their liposuction surgery. For a few weeks following the surgery there is postoperative swelling associated with this method of surgery and once the swelling goes down, patients can start to see their results showing through.

Near enough any part of the body with excess fat can be treated with liposuction, although there are some areas that are much more common than others. In women, we find that the most commonly treated areas are the breasts, hips, stomach, thighs, arms, buttocks, neck and cheeks. With men on the other hand, we find that the most commonly treated areas are the stomach, breasts, love-handles (flanks), neck and cheeks.

Liposuction is not considered to be used a method of treating obesity, although it may be recommended alongside some form of abdominoplasty surgery to help someone with obesity before they start a diet and exercise regime to be able to lose weight and see lifechanging results.

After undergoing a liposuction surgery, your body shape will undergo a permanent change as the fat cells will have been removed. These are often performed in conjunction with an abdominoplasty surgery to give a total change to the shape of the body and give the best results. Moving forwards, its important to ensure that you eat a healthy and balanced diet as anything that can cause the fat to build back up will cause the body shape to become larger again.

Following liposuction surgery, you are required to be undergo some post-anaesthesia observation but you will be able to be discharged shortly after this. Because of the anaesthetic, we recommend that you do not drive and have somebody else take you home following your surgery, but after this period you are simply advised to rest and recover for the next two days before starting to return to your everyday life.

Usually during liposuction surgeries, the maximum amount of fat that can be removed is around three or four litres. If you require more than this to be removed, then we recommend booking in for multiple liposuction surgeries to achieve the best results.

The scars associated with liposuction are generally very small and are usually just a few millimetres in length. These normally fade within a few months and the only noticeable difference will be that the area that has been treated is now much smaller.
