What is otoplasty surgery?

Otoplasty surgery is the surgical procedure responsible for the reshaping of the outer ear. The two sides of this are reconstructive surgery, which involves repairing and building up the ear due to some form of accident or deformity, and cosmetic surgery, which is more commonly seen as pinning back the ears so that they are less prominent.

Prominent ears can be especially troublesome for children and younger people who may be subject to bullying and otoplasty surgery is carried out more commonly during childhood, but it can be performed on a patient of any age if they have any issue with their ears.

There are three major types of otoplasty procedure, these are; ear augmentation which is required is the pinna is underdeveloped, otopexy (or pinning back the ears) which flattens out ears that protrude too far and ear reduction which is required when the ears are too large.

During an otoplasty procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision behind the ear where they will be able to manipulate the cartilage and tissue within the ear to give a new shape that is more symmetrical or proportionate to the rest of the head. There is a very small scar assocaited with this kind of procedure, but because it is found behind the ear it is kept out of view and will fade over time until it eventually becomes almost unnoticeable.

What should you expect with an otoplasty surgery?

Otoplasty surgery is specifically designed to improve the appearance of the outer ear, whether it’s for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons. Like the eyes, the ears are quite prominent when it comes to someone looking at your face and are something that stands out, so otoplasty is something that needs to be researched before your decide to go under the knife. All surgery comes with an element of risk and answering your questions is vital, some that we get asked most commonly are below;

Once the sutures that have been used to hold your ears in place have been in for several weeks, they can be safely removed without any worry that the ears will return to their previous state. The results of otoplasty surgery are considered to be completely permanent.
The full recovery from surgery can take up to 6 weeks, and any swelling that could cause pain around the ears should subside around the 2 to 3 week mark. Any remaining pain and swelling will continue to subside over the remaining weeks, and can be managed with over the counter pain medication.
For the first 2 weeks, it’s advised to rest and sleep with your head elevated using additional pillows for support. It’s important to try to sleep like this rather than on the side of your face/head so that the ears have time to heal without interference.

After undergoing ear surgery (and while the ear is healing), it’s important to follow some set rules to ensure it is kept clean and dry.

  1. ALWAYS make sure to keep the inside of the ear dry, if water gets in then dab it with a dry towel but don’t put anything into the ear itself (things like a Q-tip or earbud)
  2. You can shower or bathe 48 hours after surgery, but don’t soak or scrub the wound at all
  3. You can try to block the ears a little by placing a cotton wool ball coated with Vaseline into the outer bowl of the ear (don’t place anything into the ear canal itself)
  4. Dry the incisions immediately after bathing/showering and apply moisturising lotion or ointment (if prescribed) over the incisions until they are fully healed.

If you’ve been researching ear correction surgery, the terminology can change from site to site and can occasionally be a bit confusing when you’re trying to get all the facts. Some sites refer to ear correction surgery as otoplasty and some refer to it as pinnaplasty, both of these refer to the exact same procedure.

After the ears are healed there is nothing stopping you from either wearing earrings or having your ears pierced. This includes both the lobe and any cartilage based piercings.

Otoplasty surgery has no effect on your hearing. The ear has three main parts, the external and visible part of the ear, the middle ear (which is behind the eardrum) and then the inner ear, otoplasty surgery is performed on the external part (which is know as the pinna). This means that the surgery causes no effect to the inner parts of the ear and won’t effect the ability to hear.
